Kyaiktiyo or the Golden Rock Pagoda is a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Mon state. The gilded granite boulder which is about 25ft high is rested preciously on the tip of Kyaiktiyo Hill -- elevations of 1,100 m above sea level. On top of the gilded boulder is the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda where Buddha’s hair relic is enshrined. It is often referred to as the ‘gravity defying’ rock, as it rests independently on the tip of the mountain table. Pilgrims from all over Myanmar would climb Kyaiktiyo Hill to pay homage, old people and children who cannot climb are carried by porters to the Pagoda. It takes about an hour (1.2 km) to trek to the Pagoda by the paved walkway lined with kiosks along the way. Wearing shoes and socks are prohibited as with all Buddhist sites in Myanmar.
