Mingun Pahtodawgyi

The Mingun Pahtodawgyi is an incomplete stupa in Minguan, near Mandalay in Sagaing Division. It was said to have left intentionally unfinished by King Bodawpaya in 1790. The construction, using prisoners of wars, was taking a toll on the state and prophesy was created to discourage the king from completing the construction. The prophesy stated that the country would be gone as soon as the pagoda was finished. The king then slowed down the construction and project halted after the death of the king. It is massive in size and known as the largest pile of bricks in the world.

There is a mnemonic in Myanmar “Min Phyu Hman Hman Pyaw” to remember the weight of the bell by the people. The words begin with letters associated with number 5 in Burmese astronomy and numerology. It can be translated as “white (or honest) king, tell the truth”. The outer diameter of the bell is 16 feet and 3 inches and 12 feet tall. It was cast in 1808 by King Bodawpaya to go along with Mingun Pahtodawgyi, which was left unfinished.
