Sagaing U Ponya Shin

Sagaing is 20 km from Mandalay, known for its Buddhists monastic community up on the Sagaing Hill. There are over 600 monasteries and nunneries on the Sagaing Hill. Once a capital of Sagaing Kingdom (1315-1364), there are quite a few Pagodas left from the era to be seen today. Padamya Zedi in Sagaing dates back to 14th century; Tilawkaguru Cave Temple, built in 1672, known for its mural paintings; Umin Tonese or Thirty Caves Pagoda houses forty-five sitting Buddha images in a picturesque crescent hall; Kaungmudaw Pagoda, is an unusual Sri-Lanka style dome-shaped pagoda, built in 1648.

The Soon U Pona Shin Pagoda was built in 14th century; soon-u (pronounced soon-oo) means the first to offer the meal, soon, to the Buddha image. Local legend has it that no matter how early one gets up, or even sleep overnight, to offer soon to the Buddha image, there is already soon offered by devas. The terrace of the Pagoda offers panoramic views of the temples and pagodas below. Ywahtaung village near Sagaing is a traditional silversmith village, well-known for their engraving of traditional scenes on silver bowls and cups.
