Sandamuni Pagoda was built by King Mindon, on the burial site of Kanaung Minthar or Kanaung Prince (minthar means prince in Burmese), younger brother of King Mindon and much loved by the people as the modernizer. It was also the site where Kanuang Prince was assassinated by sons of King Mindon during unsuccessful coup in 1866, the Kanaung Prince fought off the assassinators before he died, allowing time for King Mindon to escape. Sandhamuni Pagoda is located next to the Kuthodaw Pagoda at the foot of Mandalay Hill. Similar to Kuthodaw Pagoda, it is surrounded by 1,774 marble stone slabs with Tripitaka (Buddha’s teachings) inscribed on them.
